Maagspeld, rugspeld, borsspeld & boudspeld series | 2008

Silver, steel wire, upholstery, stockings, thread and a handkerchief

This brooches series started as a material and form based enquiry of stockings and upholstery. Later as my enquiry developed, I made a connection that the soft materials enables the brooches to be worn comfortably on any part of the body. In Afrikaans the translation of brooch is “borsspeld”, meaning ‘chest-pin’. Instead of limiting my brooches to the chest, I chose a name the series, Maagspeld, Rugspeld, Borsspeld & Boudspeld, to refer to four different body parts and to encourage the wearer to not only wear these brooches on his/her chest.
